Staying local after college ( Pt 6 of 12 )

The speaker John introduced us to his life and what has happened to him over 26 years in staying local to his area. There is work around in this area and it is possible to make a comfortable living by doing so, its not always the case that you have to move away to a city area to make money.

He went on to tell us that he is a graphic designer and that his main business has been with the NHS over the last few years. He has gone on to produce guidance documents for GPS and PCTS. Other work he has done includes a web site for Alan Whittaker, magazine and design work, schools'  prospectus and branding, stationery, calendars, restaurant menus, leaflets for festivals, events and much more.

Very cleverly done we were shown graphs to show his life pattern and work over the 26 years they were also explained to us.

There had been two recessions one in 1990 to 93 and  a later one starting in 2008.
He left college in 1986 and was unemployed for a short time and then started to work as a graphic designer this supported his new marriage for the next 3 years approx. The numbers in green on the top yellow bar represents the size of the family 6 is 2 adults and 4 children.

Next  we were told  about how the blue area shows where he went and worked freelance but this was at the time when the recession of the 90s began. Technology was also changing and Applemacs were replacing the old methods of drawing on boards. The next yellow period shows where time was spent re - training in computers. After this a job was found where he was stable and happy. The numbers on this chart were significant parts of his life happened to change.

We continued to hear about what the colours represented in his life and about the work and family situations. How commuting can also become a large part of working but working locally was explained.
Chutzpah was explained to us as meaning (to have  audacity or cheek ) it's also a saying that apparently Judge Judy has on TV.

The colours and a talk about this slide and recessions was next.

This was explained as individual points

Start out as best as you can, don't cut corners.

There was also a chance for a question and answer session at the end of the Lecture.

Please note that the slides are actual ones shown to us in this lecture

Delivery -  10/10

I really enjoyed the delivery it  was presented in a well prepared, easy to understand  in a non jargon way.
John Mainwaring came across as sincere and very humble about all that he has achieved in his life and circumstances.

Interest - 10/10

I found this interesting and a good insight into his own life history, how  and what he has achieved was there before us all to see  an understand. Good tips and information given.

Content - 10/10

This was an excellent way for all to be explained to the captive audience,  I was really impressed how he had actually taken the time and the thought process that had gone into the preparation of the slides we saw.
