London Molinair Company ( Pt 4 of 4 )

Thank you to Toby at 34 Fouberts Place, Molinare for taking time out to show us around  and for telling us all about the Company. It was a great insight into the company.

We all sat in the reception area and waited for Tom, we were then taken  literally across the road to another part of the company's buildings.Up the many fights of stairs and out through the doors, we finally arrived in the Foley studio; this is where sound effects are made for certain projects. It was like stepping back in time to live radio broadcast. Within the small roomthere are many areas such as gravel, stone a wall full of locks and door handles, a table behind us had an array of other items on it. We stood and listened to what goes on in this particular room and I thought it was cool due to the fact that still in today's modern world these old techniques are being used. Next we were shown into a standard sound proof room, well almost! The irony is that there is one radio frequency the police use that does interfere with the room!

The Foley room

There are approximately 40 off line suites in the company and we were then shown one of the seven that we were in the vicinity of. We were then taken to  the dubbing area -  they have A through to H rooms and our attention was turned to the small TV that is used by producers for them to check the sound of anything they are to broadcast - how it sounds to the viewers at home!

We were shown Theatre 1, which is Europe's largest grading theatre. It runs base light, 2D, 3D and HD stereoscopic projector and there is also a 35mm projector. The company are also involved in restoration of films. Many companies like MGM are going down these routes and re- releasing old films. Theatre 1 used to be a film studio, Molinare back in the 80s use to do a lot of pop videos - some of the people that had recorded in the studio before the re-vamp were Blondie and Oasis. There was also a chance when we went around  to ask questions and there was so much information about the company to take in and be absorbed as well as visually appreciated.

As a company they can be flexible to the clients' needs and budget and  we were then taken to one of their Head of Audio study suites - these particular ones had a VO booth, these are where Master Chief projects are worked on. Next we were then taken to the basement to be shown technical parts of the company. Tom told us about  what it can entail in being a runner and about how many other staff there are - such as bar and security. There is a QC room which is short for Quality Control, there were many rooms which we couldn't go into such as the VT room this was because of insurance purposes and the cost of the equipment such as the cost for a SR deck is £80,000.
