Huddersfield Art Gallery - 26.7.2014

I was quite taken with the Huddersfield Art Gallery building. I couldn't help but wonder if it was of the Art Deco period. When I walked up the stairs to the gallery, the lines spoke of the Art Deco design. When I went up the stairs I got the sense that I was being transported back in time and it evoked images of tall, slender ladies with evening dresses and gloves. To satisfy my curiosity I did actually enquire about the age of the building and it was, infact, Art Deco, built in the 1930s.

I enjoyed viewing these images as I don't recall viewing much print work before. I liked the use of vibrant colors and the subject of industry and its remains.

It was great to see the beautiful scenery of Yorkshire as I had never visited here before

When I walked into the area, I couldn't help but notice that they were all black and white images with a white border in a black frame, which I thought set it off nicely. I like the way that the photographer had included in some environments that complimented the images. I also liked the usage of varying camera angles. I have included two photos which I was permitted to take at the exhibition of quotes from individuals that were featured in the exhibition. I was surprised by just how many famous people had originated from Yorkshire.

I love the use of vibrant colours - it makes the images really stand out. The blue and yellow in particular really took my eye. From a distance it reminded me of the cubist painter Andrew Southall who is based in Anglesey.

Faces in the street Exhibition - 18.7.2014

I was looking forward to viewing this exhibition as it was linked to my M.A final project, that I am currently undertaking. My approach is to document through photography aspects of poverty in the 21st century.

I found the idea that Stephanie had taken very interesting: the more personal and dignified approach of a one to one sitting in an environment that was familiar and safe to the individual and herself. Through each sitting individuals gained trust and were comfortable enough to talk to Stephanie.

I also enjoyed watching the film that accompanied this exhibition. The use of the framed portrait on the black figure served to keep individuals anonymous yet tell of their own personal experiences of life on the street.
