Oriel Wrexham ( Pt 12 of 12 )

We were introduced to the new Arts Manager, Stefan Jones Hughes in an overview of his job which looks  at the arts in general such as Dance,Live Art, Flim, Photography,Theatre and Drama to name but a few. He then went on to explain that it is actually the 3rd or 4th day that he has been in his new role, this at the moment is part time. Stefan is also a visual artist, the regional print centre in Yale College, Wrexham was set up by him and which he also run for approx 8 and a half years prior to working for the Arts Council.

There was an open invitation to everyone if they were interested in volunteering, even just a look around the Gallery or chat.

For the talk about Learning we were then handed over to somebody else who I didn't catch her name. The learning at Oriel Wrexham  covers different types of learning skills from beginners to adult courses. The organisation Engage, which is based in London, but we do have a more local one called Engage Cymru. A project they were involved in was with the Early Learners which are children under 3 years of age. Chris Jones, a glass artist, worked with 30 children who were between 4 and 5 years old. Her artistic approach to things was soon spotted in how the children were taught, through the process  of what they did. Through play they were able to learn about materials and colours and  this statement was linked to how as adults we still explore and learn. Chris was asked back on a number of occasions. This original project was so successful that  in spring and summer local nursery and playschool children now use the Gallery.

They have had a  Japanese exhibition  which was more contemporary and this actually came from the Japan Foundation.

Photo Mission was where community artists were asked to bring in certain projects  to the Gallery which were on a set brief. One Project was that children were given a word which they then had to go out and photograph.

A large project called Explore,  was to encourage disabled and deaf  people into Visual Arts. Wrexham was one of 8 galleries in the UK that was given funding and they then had to find a cluster of galleries.

I must confess that I didn't actually go to this talk as by this point my head was swimming with too much information from all week. So I asked someone kindly to take my recorder into the lecture. Due to it being based in Wrexham I didn't want to miss the Lecture to find out more to what goes on within their walls.

Interest - 8/10

I found the lecture interesting and informative about what projects are held the work that goes on the in gallery.

Delivery - 8/10

I especially liked the manner of the delivery of lecture, the two speakers came across very excited and passionate about their work within the gallery.

Content - 8/10

A small slideshow was shown, it was also nice to hear about what actually goes on in the gallery and have a better insight into their work.
