Working with - in an art gallery ( Pt 9 of 12 )

The director of Oriel  Davies in Newtown Powys, Amanda Farr gave the lecture and firstly made us aware that any references made were to visual Art, which also covered illustration.  The Gallery's mission is to connect people with art in Montgomeryshire and to give an opportunity to artists from Wales and internationally to create and show art of excellence. Proved a welcoming and stimulating environment where Artists and audiences engage with and participate in contemporary art and culture.

We heard about the gallery and how they get around 90.000  visits  a year, a lot  of them are repeat visits. The population of Powys is only 130.000. Within their program they put on exhibitions and education programs and there is also a cafe and shop in the gallery.

The building was built in 1967 using money left by benefactors called the Davies Sisters. Margaret and Gwendolyn, who were Edwardian, lived near the town. Oriel is an independent organisation gallery and are registered with the charity commission,  not a commercial one, or run by the local authority. They are a nonprofitable gallery and anything that is made from sales is then put back into the running of the organisation. They do not have the space for an art collection, they tour their exhibitions to other venues and are in partnership with other galleries and museums to create special projects. They have 200 plus square metres space for exhibiting and have very large staff structure within the environment. Amanda then went on to talk in more depth about roles within the environment such as curator, facilitators etc and ways which to get to work in  the area you are interested in.

One of the Projects

The Cladded House-by Steve Messam

The brief was originally called "Pattern" and  the artist was looking at the architecture after doing some research about the area. He wanted to bring in the local sheep  and create the cladding and this was then turned black and white. A model of the house was made and pictures took which enabled it to tour. Initially the cladding on the house was only meant to stay for a couple of weeks. It became popular with locals and it actually stayed up for a few months. In 2010 the cladding was taken down and the house has since sadly burned down now.

Interest - 8/10

It was a very interesting  in-depth look at the work that goes on behind the scenes at the gallery, projects they have worked on and history about the place. Valuable information was given to anybody that was interested in working in this field.

Delivery - 8/10

A nice non-rushed delivery, audience participation was encouraged.

Content - 6/10

A small slideshow was shown but despite this although I found it really informative ,though with some areas I got lost in facts and names.
