Critical studies lectures reviewed Design Thinking 20.10.2011

We were introduced to Victor Papanek, if there is such a thing as a true and honest designer then he came across as the kind of guy that I would trust. For many reasons such as I liked his work ethics and his ability to work to accomandate the bigger picture.

He has wrote many books in his choosen field, one being:

Others that have contributed books to this topic are Tom Kelly, Daniel Pink and Tim Brown.

"We are all designers. All that we do, almost all of the time is design, for design is basic to all human activity’.

The above quote by Victor makes us look at our role within the world a little differently and more broader.
He has many good quotes others include.

We were shown the 6 phases of  production  resulting in pollution, this was something that was brought to the front of our minds. The 10 commandments of design was a simple yet honest work ethic to adhere to.

I really liked the idea of the Design Thinking work set - especially the statement which stated that "DESIGN IS ABOUT BEING HUMAN CENTRED" and how it cares about the people they design for. This made more sense understanding the T shaped designers. In some ways it was a long way from the story we were told in the Design and Ethics lecture about the designer who was so against tobacco that he purposely designed a cigarette packet so the consumer couldn't get into it and broke the contents inside. This was totally unethical to me and riped off the consumer due to the creators hang ups about tobacco!

Many areas were explored in design thinking methodology, the importance of embracing design thinking and closely linked to this is the design process and team working to help businesses.

On You tube I have found  interesting many videos on the dynamics in which the design company IDEO  work. To me this is the most interesting part of being given a problem and being in the company of like minded people to solve and create solutions to these problems.

INTEREST      8/10
At the time of the lecture I became over whelmed with terminologies and the information became lost in transit. Despite this I have found the tutors powerpoint notes and it has helped to explain  in a simpler terminology for me the content of the lecture.
CONTENT    10/10
DELIVERY  10/10    one of the most passionate lectures I've heard out of them all.
